SEO-Magento Configuration Guide
Magento is the eCommerce platform most used in the world and the powers of more than 200,000 e-commerce stores . Magento SEO can be friendly , but the " out of the box " installation has a number of SEO issues . With this in mind , this guide is designed to help users configure their Magento installation the most efficient way from the SEO point of view .
URL
There are a number of problems with the URL to the box Magento implementation - such as the use of category paths within URLs and page navigation layers. URLs products must be secured to the upper level , which means not using its path category, which can cause duplicate content issues . The URLs of the products must be : " example.com / example - product.html instead of example.com / category / sub - cat / example - product.html " .
Page navigation layers can cause a lot of problems with indexing more and should be prevented from being indexed by using the canonical tag and potentially noindex , follow robots meta tags .
I would also recommend keeping query string parameters , instead of trying to hide the fact that they are dynamic - here's an example : "the price Example.com / category = 2000-5000 Example.com/category/price/2000- 5000 ? " . You can assign rules based on query strings, but it is much more difficult if URLs are using static directories.
For example, my MageSEO extension can be used to assign manual rules ( using different match types ) to sets of pages that do not want search engines to index .
Using the canonical tag
SEO magelogo Quickie : # Magento GuideYou configuration must use the canonical tag on the product and pages to ensure that searchers know when dynamic or duplicate pages are not the primary version of a page. Page navigation layers or trailing slash pages are examples of what should be canonicalised primary URL. For example , if " example.com / category " and " example.com / category / " are the same, one of the pages referenced in the canonical tag on both pages , which tells the search engines that the primary is the page to be indexed .
Canonical Tag is generally very effective if you are launching a new website, or re- platforms that have not previously had over indexing problems - however, if you already have problems with excess indexing , it is not necessarily the best choice . I often use meta robots tags to address this issue , as it allows you to submit a removal request in Google Webmaster Tools to solve the problem faster - the canonical tag does not meet the requirements to do so .
Redirects
Out of the box, Magento uses 302 redirects by default - this must be changed in the configuration backend to use 301 redirects , since the value of approval. Headers Templates Magento page headers often use bad and it is common category pages that have multiple H1 headings, the page does not contain a H1 header and page titles have categories for products tailored to H2S. Headers are only a minor signal on the page , however it is worth fixing them.
Pages should not be indexable
As above layered navigation pages should not be indexed because it can be a big problem indexing excess and duplication. Catalog Search pages should not be accessible to search engines because they do not have any unique content and are not valuable for researchers. You should use the noindex , follow tag to prevent search engines access to these pages. Pages on your list, checkout pages , and pages of images ( depending on how you are using images ) also add no value and should not be indexable .
These are just a few examples - the general rule should be to prevent any page without unique and valuable content indexing - other examples could be duplicate pages review ( a common problem Magento ) image pages ( not files , but pages ) and redundant duplicate products (often can be found in the catalog of the previous structure / / URL ) .
Magento Rewrites
Rewriting engine Magent can cause a number of problems from the SEO point of view , such as appending numbers to the end of the URL ( because it thinks the URLs had existed previously ) , loops unnecessary redirection and redirects unwanted - that may conflict with the canonical tag to cause even more problems . I also wrote this article on Magento SEO , which covers this in a bit more detail and additional points.
Pagination
Screenshot 2014 02 11 at 19.16.331 SEO Quickie : GuidePaginated pages # Magento configuration ( for example : P = 2 ) must use the following tags prev rel and to illustrate that pages are numbered . This can be achieved by using a module or asking their developers to add the label . This can be accomplished by either by adding the previous or next to the link attribute or through head rel .
In conclusion , Magento can be a great platform from the SEO point of view , however , do not have problems if you are using a configuration of ' outside the box ' . Third party plugins or a good developer can help to overcome problems with the platform and once they have been resolved , it is actually very good from the SEO point of view.
